Upon leaving the port of Milazzo, we'll set sail for the island of Salina, the second largest of the Seven Sisters. Salina is the greenest and most lush of the islands, just a stone's throw north of Lipari. It dominates the entire Aeolian archipelago with its twin peaks and two extinct volcanoes: "Fossa delle Felci" and "Monte dei Porri," whose sinuous lines have been compared to Sophia Loren's breasts. The island is divided into three municipalities: Leni, Malfa, and Santa Marina. Although they are distant from each other, there is always a good bus service connecting the towns until late at night. Alternatively, renting a scooter will allow you to visit the most picturesque places, including Rinella and Pollara. We recommend a tasting of Malvasia—the island's typical dessert wine—or an aperitif of capers and cucunci. The island also became famous thanks to the award-winning film "Il Postino" by Massimo Troisi, starring Maria Grazia Cucinotta and Philippe Noiret, which was filmed on the island's streets and in the town of Pollara.
At 2:45 PM, a direct ferry will take you to the island of Lipari. Lipari is the largest island, the beating heart of the archipelago, and lies in the center of the Aeolian Islands. It is characterized by the picturesque Faraglioni, two volcanic rocks formed by ancient volcanic activity and sculpted by the sea and wind: "Petra Lunga" and "Petra Menalda." From the Marina Corta port, for those who prefer to explore on foot, crossing Piazza Ugo di Sant'Onofrio, lined with bars and restaurants, a visit to the castle, or Acropolis, is a must. Inside the city walls, you'll find the cathedral of the patron saint "San Bartolomeo," an archaeological site, an ancient monastery, and the "Luigi Bernabo Brea" Archaeological Museum. Alternatively, walking along the main Corso "Vittorio Emanuele" or Via "Garibaldi," immersed in a maze of narrow streets and shops, you can immerse yourself in the true Aeolian atmosphere. For those who enjoy enjoying the beautiful scenery of Lipari, we recommend a guided bus tour.
